Appropriation in Street Art

Cultural appropriation is defined as purposefully reusing works of other artists to create a new cultural product that is open to public interpretation. Banksy is appropriating Huynh Cong Ut's 'Children fleeing a Napalm strike' photograph that was taken during the Vietnam War. His artwork is also composed by two of the most recognizable commercial figures in the American culture, Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald. Both American symbols represent the consumerist and capitalist society in the United States. This short explores how street artists such as Banksy undergo the process of appropriating images that belong to specific cultural and historical contexts.

RISK : Pressurized Content presented by Bluecanvas

From the streets to the galleries, RISK has done it all... As an artist in the 1980s, RISK pushed the limits of graffiti and gained notoriety not only for his unique style, but for being one of the first writers in Southern California to paint freight trains and freeway overpasses. RISK was responsible for importing New York's Wild Style of graffiti to Los Angeles and combining it with his own aesthetic of lettering to create something entirely new. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets into the galleries and recently played a major role in MOCA's groundbreaking Art in the Streets exhibition, which brought mainstream recognition to graffiti as a serious art medium. With a career spanning more than 30 years, RISK is continually evolving and pushing his personal limits as an artist. His story is a true testament that all artists must strive to break boundaries, and that anything can be accomplished if you are willing to take a risk. Full interview available in Bluecanvas magazine Issue 12.

The Language of Street-Art: Shai Dahan at TEDxGöteborg

Started as a graffiti writer at age 14 while living in Los Angeles. Shai has always challenged himself to find new ways of creating public art. Currently, he lives in Borås, Sweden with his wife and two dogs. In May 2012, Shai traveled to a conflict-driven region of Israel to take part of a creative collaboration and an art journey. As he became part of this journey, Shai realized that this project was more than just drawing a painting on a wall. It became a journey for finding hope in a land where optimism seemed to have vacated long ago.

Evoke

Highly esteemed for pushing the boundaries of street art, he has painted outdoors under the pseudonym Evoke throughout North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. Thompson is often placed into the "Canadian School" of street artists including Other, Labrona, and Thesis Sahib, a group known for their inspired improvisations and openness towards freeform mark making. Thompson's own creative process develops through a self-coined process he refers to as "mistakism", whereby the artist allows a memory, feeling, sentence, or some other bite of information to spark the beginning of a particular work. Imagery follows, inspired by the 'in-between' places found throughout the Canadian landscape, converging into dreamlike scenes. This union creates a pictorial space where imaginary characters, forms and marks can interact in a place that is whimsical as well as charged. In 2007, Thompson created "Ishtar Gate" in collaboration with artists Derek Mehaffey and Juan Carlos Noria for; BAC! 07 International Festival of Contemporary Art in Barcelona; Edition VIII.

His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including; The Royal Ontario Museum; Institute for Contemporary Culture in Toronto, Luminato, the Singapore Contemporary Arts Museum, Desert Generation at Artist House Gallery in Jerusalem, Lombardi Gallery in Austin Texas and INOPERABLE Gallery in Vienna, Austria. Wall painting installation work includes Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, Quest University in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, SAW Gallery in Ottawa, Canada and Hualien, Taiwan.
